Astrobiology

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been learning in science. So for science I am up to a task about possible life on other planet's. The task for today was to read an article and answer questions that were on a slide.

The main idea of this article was about people trying to find out if their were living objects on other planets and different people's perspective on "alien" life. The "Goldilocks zone"or the "Habitable zone" means that the planet isn't too close to the sun and isn't too far away from the sun meaning the environment would be perfect for other life.

Mass is important because it helps things move in space the more mass the planet has the more it resists moving. It has to do with gravity because the amount of gravity is proportional to the amount of mass. The similarity between Mars and Antarctica is the sandstone something about the microbes in sandstone.

If I found out that there was extraterrestrial life I would be intrigued because I wonder how they would react and if they lived a similar lifestyle to us.

A Script

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be writing a script based off of a video on YouTube we had to watch called Geri's Game. The video was about an old man who was playing chess by himself and kept going back and forth acting like a different person depending on what side he was on and one side was winning and then he turned the board around and tricked his "other self".

Here is my script......

*An old man sitting at a table in the middle of the park with a chess board in front of him*

Old Man (With Glasses) * Set's up chess board*

Old Man (Without Glasses) : Let's begin this game !

Old Man (With Glasses) : Ok !

Old Man (Without Glasses) : * moves piece *

Old Man (With Glasses) : *Moves different piece*

*This goes on until one of them is about to win the old man without glasses has all his pieces whereas the old man with glasses only has one piece left*

Old Man (With Glasses) : *becomes upset* I'm going to lose.

Old Man (Without Glasses) : *Becomes happy* I'm going to win !

Old Man (With Glasses) : *Fakes Heart Attack*

Old Man (Without Glasses) : * Becomes Worried for the old man with glasses* Oh no are you ok ?

Old Man (With Glasses) : *Stays Silent*

Old Man (Without Glasses) : *Looks under the table to see if he is ok*

Old Man (With Glasses) : * Get's up and rotates the board so he becomes the winning person*

Old Man (Without Glasses) : *Tries to look for ways to win but can't find any*

Old Man (With Glasses) : Haha I'm going to win ! *moves piece and wins*

Old Man (Without Glasses) : That's not fair !

Old Man (With Glasses) : Yes it is !

Old Man (Without Glasses) : *sighs and gives the old man with glasses fake teeth*

Old Man (With Glasses) : Yay! I won ....*Put's teeth in *

WW1 Women

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for Who Are We hurumanu. So for Who Are We we have been learning about the impact that WW1 had on females in New Zealand and what they were left to do and things they did before the war.

Here is my blog post.....

I hope you learnt something from this blog post.

Planet Detective

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for science. So for this lesson of science we have to answer questions about the atmosphere on different planets. These questions are on our hurumanu site on a slideshow.

Two of the reasons mercury lost most of its atmosphere is because the closer to the sun the hotter the atmosphere and the molecules are moving faster and so can reach escape velocity and the other reason is because of the lack of gravity.

The distance between the Sun and Mercury is 57.712 km and the distance between the Sun and Earth is 151.22 km as you can see there is a lot of difference. Earths mass is 6 with 24 0's kg and Mercury's mass is 3 with 23 0's kg. As you can see there is a lot of difference between each planet's things.

Not having an atmosphere affects the temperature on Mercury because without an atmosphere to keep a warm temperature at night temperatures can go as low as -290°F.

The name Mercury came from the Romans who believed that gods and goddesses were in charge of everything on Earth. Mercury is named after the messenger for their gods. Whereas Whiro is the lord of darkness and embodiment of all evil in Māori mythology. Other names for Mercury are Nebu and Hermes these names were given by the ancient Greeks.

Navigation

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for Science. So for science we have been creating a piece of explanation writing based off of navigation in different places the two topics we focused on were navigation in space and how the Polynesians navigated.

We started with a plan and then we worked on turning the planned ideas into paragraphs then we put the work altogether to make a piece of writing. Next we got paired up my partner was Felicity and we had to read each other's piece of writing correcting any mistakes we saw. After we had looked at each other's work we looked at a writing rubric and rated each others work. We also rated our own work to see what level we think that we are at and Felicity and I both compared our ratings.

Here is my piece of explanation writing...

Do you know about how people used to navigate without using electronics? Back in the day people didn’t have devices to help navigate, so they had to go off of what was in front of them.

Some of the ways that the Polynesians used to navigate are with stars. They did this by learning about the different constellations and star shapes. For example if they were facing the southern cross they would know they were heading south. They also used birds because birds never travel that far away from land so when they saw either birds or just a single bird they would know they were near land.

Another thing they used to navigate was the position of the sun. There are a few more ways one of them being the height of the clouds. They also navigated off of the current of the water and which way the boat was swaying the current of the water is the way the water moves. One more way is the swell which has to do with the shape of the wave.

Some of the ways that astronauts use to navigate is also the positioning of the stars. A couple more ways that they navigated was with morse code and certain flag positions. There are many similarities between these two ways of navigating, one of them being that neither of the ways use technology and the other reason being they both use the star in order to navigate.

In conclusion navigation takes a lot of skill and time it must have been hard for the polynesians and astronauts.

Egg Drop

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for science. So for science we had to create a barrier around the egg to stop it from cracking and then dropped it from the room upstairs. We got to choose our teams in my team we had Felicity and Ashton.

To stop the egg from cracking we wrapped it in fluff and newspaper then we stuck it down into a cardboard barrier we stuck it down with tape. I think this stopped the egg from cracking because there was a lot of soft fabrics and materials preventing the egg from cracking. This is similar to the rover landing on mars because they both have to have a soft landing or it will explode and all be for nothing.

Here is a photo of the egg and our creation....

I hope you liked my blog post about the egg dropping activity.

Animal Cost

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for Math's. So for math's we had to get the costs of animals and their needs and then put the onto a table and then add the costs all up together and find the best pet to get for the class. I personally thought that the Axolotl would be the best pet to buy as it is small cheap and easy to look after. Compared to the other animals it is also a sensible choice.

Here is my Doc with the tables on it....

Kirsty and I think that it would be best to get an Axolotl because it's cheaper and easier to look after,

there is less to do so that they won’t have to take time to prepare work for the students to get a pet.

Kirsty and I also discussed that you don’t need that much money to get the things because instead of

getting the expensive brands you can get the budget brands.
