Summer Learning Journey ~ Task 1

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's activity I had to colour in a piece of art and compare it to the original piece of art I chose to do this wave design. This task was given to me as one of the tasks from the Summer Learning Journey.

I decided to make the background look like the sky and the clouds because I thought it would look really nice.

EOTC ~ Recount Blog

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be sharing with you what we did on the EOTC days. We had three activities Adrenaline Forest, Christchurch City Centre and Jellie Park. 

For Adrenaline Forest I really enjoyed climbing the trees, and the instructions given by the teachers were very clear. Another thing I liked was that the teachers and people around you would help and support you if you got stuck or scared. For instance I don't know what level I was on but I got stuck and so did my friend and we both waited for each other and then went together. The 3b level was fun but some of the things you had to do was tough already and then me and my friend were not smart and decided that even though we struggled with level 3b that we would still move to level 4 and then halfway through we somehow switched to a different level. 

Now I am going to talk about my experience in the Christchurch City Centre so first we went to Margaret Mahy Playground it was alright we had a weird encounter with a stranger but other than that it was rather fun. After that we walked to Turanga (Library) and got to have a look at each floor but I got really light headed when we reached the top and we didn't get to explore just got talked to and they explained what was on each level. The last thing we did in the City Centre was go to the Canterbury Museum we were put into groups and me and my friends accidentally lost our group so we just joined a different group. We ended up finding our group again though afterwards. Something I learnt was that it's good to hang out with different people sometimes. :)

Horror Story

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be sharing with you the start of a story that Kirsty and I wrote. We don't have an overall name for this story yet. We were inspired by sharing horror movies we had watched and putting something together off of that. 

Here is the story...

Chapter 1: The Beginning 

A bell chimed behind me, I slowly turned around and locked eye contact with an old man,

he stared at me with his cold green eyes. I felt whispers rush around my body, and then time froze.

All I could do was stand and wait. Literally I couldn’t move, but he could. He moved so slowly he looked

like he was in pain, he spoke but they were only whispers that had been messed with by the wind.

I started floating upwards. I looked up to see what was in my path and there was a body hanging from

a rope.  I started to shake,   I didn’t know what to do so I just watched in shock. The rope started to fray. 

The dead body fell into a deep well, it dragged me down with it. SPLASH. We landed in a puddle. 

I was so disgusted about being with a dead body I moved away from the dead body.  Then you wouldn’t

believe what I saw next……

Boy Book Review

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what I have been doing for Reading. So for reading we have been reading novel study's I read the story Boy by Roald Dahl and I will be sharing with you today my opinion aka a book review on what the novel is like. 

I chose this novel out of the lot because I am usually interested in reading Roald Dahl and David Walliam books,  and I thought that it would make sense for me to choose that novel also because one of the novel selections I read it the last time we were doing a novel study. Over all I think this book is a really detailed well explained book but only read it if you are into really old fashioned type of books. Meaning older words, and stuff like that. 

My favourite part of this story was the part were it talks about the boazers because it was really interesting and I found it nice that we still semi have something that can relate to what it was like back then. Obviously not the beating up part but the sort of leader side of things. 

There were heaps of characters in this book and no I can't remember all there names but I remember one and that was the lady that had the "encounter" with the rat. Mrs Pratchett.

I recommend this book to people who are interested in biography's and old styled written books. Also if you enjoy reading mystery type books. Out of five I would rate this story a 3/5 because it is well written but its just not my cup of tea.

Speechs

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what I have been doing for Writing / Art. So for this hurumanu we have been writing a persuasive speech. My speech was about why I think gum should be allowed in class / school. Something I enjoyed from this speech unit is researching the information and turning it into paragraphs I liked it because it turned something little and not useless but not detailed into something detailed and big. 

I really struggled with parts of the writing which were finding more information to make the speech 2-3 minutes long which was our time target, and it was difficult finding ways to add more information to make it longer. It was also hard finding new things to write about and not repeating the same point over and over again. But I pushed through by researching and re -reading the speech over and over again.

I learnt by recording myself that I struggled with reading and looking at the screen at the same time, so concentrating on multiple things. I am a clear speaker usually I just can't be as good when its being recorded right in front of me. 

I think that persuasive writing is good because it can help you defend yourself and argue your way through things like if you disagree with someone. It can also expand your knowledge on the topic you are learning about. 

Unfortunately the person that has my recording is away so when I next see her I will ask her to send the video through and put it on this blog post. 

Gymnastics ~ Term 4

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for P.E. So for in P.E we have been doing gymnastics. We have been learning many different things and many different parts of gymnastics like trampoline, beam etc.

Four things you can do on the trampoline is swivel hips, front flip, back flip and knee flip. On the beam you can do hops, leaps, frog jumps and walking backwards. Another thing is parallel bars you can do many things on these like walking on hands - forwards and backwards, leg lifts and tuck jumps.

Another part of gymnastics is the bar you can do a forward flip on the bar and a circle up, roll off bar and a tuck legs through roll. On the floor/mat you can do a cartwheel, handstand, headstand and a forwards roll, and on the mini trampoline you can do a crash dive, flip, tuck jumps and barani.

Something new that I have learnt this term is how many parts to gymnastics there is. 

EOTC Tasks

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what I have been doing for Wananga so for Wananga we were given a choice of tasks to do and you have to do one task out of each topic.....

What activity are you looking forward to doing the most ?

I am looking forward to the adrenaline forest activity because I enjoy climbing and there is a lot of that in this activity. I am also looking forward to it because it seems like the most active activity out of the three activities. 

The activity that I am doing for extra for experts is finding three photos from an art gallery and writing about how they make me feel, like maybe what senses they make you think of. 

The first picture I chose was this..

It reminds of this time when I went out on my poppas boat and we went near something bay and it was so pretty. This was in Picton and we drove to this little restaurant thing and parked the boat up and then went inside and the view was exactly like this. You could see other boats and the other smaller islanders surrounding the island we were on. It was really enjoyable and the food was delicious. 

This reminds me of the second part on the boat with Poppa we ended up staying on the boat for the night and when we woke up at around 12:00am the anchor had dragged in the night and we ended up closer to the docks and saw all the boats. 

This looks to me like a monkey wrapped in a snakes skin with fur over it. I am un-sure on what it is but it looks very strange and different from the other art that I saw in the art gallery. 

Boy ~ Week 6 Fast Finishers task

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be sharing with you the school uniform that Felicity and I made as part of the tasks that were given. The actual task was to create a new school uniform, you could choose the aesthetic and everything. Me and my partner decided to incorporate our school colours into the uniform.

Speech Writing

 Kia Ora Fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For the past 2 weeks we have been working on writing a persuasive speech. We have been practicing reading our speech out loud for around 2 lessons now I am pretty sure that its around 2 lessons. Anyway I really enjoyed writing this speech, as one of my passions is writing. At times I did find it difficult to add onto the writing so I worked on one speech at a time, and then once I had finished each paragraph I added them together and changed them around to completely make sense.

Here is my speech..

Bonjour, my name is Shelby. Have you ever thought it was weird that you aren’t

allowed to chew gum in class? Well today I will be sharing with you

why I think we should be allowed to chew gum in class. 

Mrs Handley, a Senior Geography teacher at Hornby High School told me that the reason

for not chewing gum is it takes ages to get of the concrete and damages things like tables,

chairs etc, but I said if they get rid of the rule then kids will stop hiding the gum

under tables and chairs and then the cleaner will have less to no gum to clean up. 

Studies have shown that chewing gum can improve concentration in visual memory tasks,

sustained attention and it reduces stress. You may be wondering how chewing gum helps

concentration, well it helps because it is proven that any repetitive activity helps people

concentrate. Chewing gum also reduces heartburn and helps with weight loss meaning it

distracts you from wanting to eat food. Another thing that chewing gum helps with is having

fresh breath which could possibly cancel out any stress about bad breath one more thing it

eliminates is nausea. Meaning less students missing out on learning because of feeling nauseous.

There are more reasons why gum is good like it keeps your teeth healthy.

It does this by increasing your saliva flow and it also removes leftover food from your teeth.

A dental association also recommends chewing gum to stop cavities. The best gum to eat is

sugar free gum and gum with ginger or mint in it especially if you are already Ill trust me it is

a lot better than eating a dessert and they are natural remedies so it won’t do any harm.

Also there are heaps of different brands and flavours so you never get bored with it.

To summarize this speech I think that we should be allowed to chew

gum as it doesn’t harm people in fact all it does is benefit people’s health. Don’t you

want to be able to chew gum in school ?.

100 Word Challenge

Here is my story...

I once heard a myth about these magic bubbles, it was said they could take you anywhere you would

like. Ever since I heard about these I had been on the hunt for one looking in forests near hills. Anywhere

you could think of I had looked. I of course still lived a normal life, like went to school and all just instead

of hanging out with friends and family I would be hunting for this magic bubble. So there again I was

searching for a bubble but this time I went under water, then I found one and traveled to Greece.

Boy ~ Week 5

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what my task is for reading so for this weeks task we have to answer questions on a well written blog post. 

I learnt that life in the 1920's-30's was rough because whatever the teacher said goes it doesn't matter what the child says once somethings happened there was no going back for example in the chapter Captain Hardcastle he "caught Roald Dahl cheating" when he was really just asking a person for a new nib, and even though Captain Hardcastle wouldn't have actually been able to hear the conversation the head master still listened to him.

I haven't read any other Roald Dahl books but I have read David Walliams and I've noticed that both writers emphasis what they are talking about and they exaggerate the text to make it more interesting.

If I was to write an autobiography about my life I would include all of the animal's I've had because I think that would be really important to add because of my love for animals. I would also include the sadder things that happened in my life because even though it is sad it still shaped me into who I am today. Another thing I would include is I would talk about my connection with my family like my dad, sister, mum and my half and step siblings, because they are my family and I think that would also be quite important to add.

Fast Finisher Task :

My favourite part from this story is probably not necessarily a chapter but learning about how it was like at his school and also learning what happened to him and thinking about the differences from then to now. Like now you actually have a say in what you do but then you kind of didn't.

Another activity we had to do was create our own activity and get it approved by Miss Birtch. I thought of an activity and that was to predict what was going to happen in the next chapter. 

I think that in the next chapter Roald Dahl is going to talk about a goat or something like that. I also think he is going to be talking about his family. Other than that I am really not quite sure on what is going to happen in the next chapter.

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for reading so for the fast finisher task we had to create what we thought Roald Dahl would look like I decided to use a character maker.

Boy ~ Week 4

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for reading. So for reading we have to choose 10 words that we don't know in the book and then write what page we found them on and our understanding of what it means.....

Sovereign ( pg 107 ) = It is a British gold coin. For instance he put his tooth under the pillow and woke up finding a sovereign in its place.

Ether ( pg 106 ) = It is used as a anesthetic.  For instance he put ether on his cut. 

Chloroform ( pg 106 ) = It is a sweet smelling liquid that is also used as a anesthetic. For instance he had to have chloroform but on his wound before the operation. 

Meshed ( pg 104 ) = Having the appearance of mesh or a network. For example his skin looked meshed.

Battering ( pg 90 ) = The action of striking repeatedly. As an example, It was like a battering-ram. 

Cauldron ( pg 30 ) = A metal pot that is used to cook things in. For instance she used a cauldron to cook her soup. 

Unfortunately I was unable to find anymore words that I don't understand so I'm just going to have to stick with having six words. 

100 Word Challenge ~ Week 4

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be sharing with you a 100 word challenge story. This task was set by Miss Birtch. We had to create a 100 word story based off of a snippet of a story.

Here is my story.....

I woke up and ran out of the door, to the sound of a bang. I saw heaps of footprints over the front of my car. I looked closer and they were human prints. I got scared and went inside locking all the doors. I shut the windows and did everything I could to feel comfortable in my own house again. I quickly looked out the window before I locked it and saw a guy standing dressed entirely in black I could tell it was a boy because of the masculine build. I then saw nothing but light.. THE END….

 My focus for this class is learning new gymnastic skills. The 3 activities I did from the card were the airplane which is on the beam. The forward flip on the bar, and the backward flip also on the bars. Here is a picture of my friend doing the airplane as I didn't get myself doing one.

200 Word Challenge

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post we had to create a 200 word story based of of a visual prompt. 

This is my story...

My heart skipped a beat as I heard something creeping up from behind me, I stopped dead in the middle of the ocean I slowly tilted my head down nothing but black and darkness my mind went into a state of panic no longer floating but drowning fighting for air… for life. I calmed myself slowly going up to the top of the water. I heard it again. I stayed still not daring to move. I looked along the water and saw the reflection of a scaly, slimy, scary looking creature. It skimmed across my legs, I gasped for air as it slowly painfully turned around. It’s mouth widening ready to engulf me, I paused as darkness surrounded me. I was slowly dropping deep into this gooey liquid. I was falling in like it was quicksand I needed to find something to keep me from drowning. I found this long stick looking thing and jammed it into the bottom of this creature fighting for life. I grabbed onto the stick and swung myself out of the goo it started to rise. I saw light coming from an opening in the body. I walked towards it and escaped. Finally I said.

Boy ~ Week 3

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for Reading. So for reading this week we had to read from page 60-84. We also had to write our summaries for each chapter describing separately what they were about. We also had to go into a group discussion and talk about questions that were on a slide and then we had to create our own question.

The questions me and my discussion group made were...

What are adenoids, our answer was : I found out that adenoids are things that are high up in the throat nearly near the nose, and some people get them infected so you have to get them removed, and that is what happened to Roald Dahl.

another question was how do we think Roald Dahl felt leaving home, our answer was : he felt bad and scared bad because he was upset that he had to leave home and his family, and scared because he has to make friends all over again but he also might've been excited to make new friends and to get away from the people at his old school.

Gymnastics ~ Sport

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for PE. So today we have been practicing on the single bar. We were practicing flipping over the bar and putting one leg on the bar and flipping over it. I learnt a new way to flip over the single bar, which was the way with the one leg over the bar.

Abstract Art

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for Art. So for art we have been creating multiple different arts pieces. We have been learning about abstract art and have been learning about the six elements. The first element being lines meaning different types of lines curved lines etc. The next element is textures which means it looks like something that you can touch. Two other element is Shapes these can be organic shapes (made up) or geometric shapes (normal shapes). Another element is tones which is like shading and different colours ombred together. The last element is colours which is just using different colours like red, blue, yellow and more. 

My favourite part of these lessons was creating the last piece of art which was making a piece of art using two contrasting words and somehow connecting them. For instance Cold and hot and Light and Dark. A part that challenged me was using my imagination to connect the two contrasting words. Some advice for if your wanting to try abstract art don't try and use all of the elements if you're a beginner because it's quite difficult I would suggest choosing 2-4 and just focusing on them. 

For the first abstract art piece we had to use the words Fear, Growth and Aroha making three separate art pieces that would come together and for the second task I chose to use the words, Day and Night.

Drama

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for drama. We have been learning about freeze frames. The focus' for doing this were Levels, Facial expressions, Spacial Relations and Posture. By levels I mean we had to have some people low other higher and some medium height like maybe on their knees or something, Facial expressions to show how the character feels. Spacial Relations to show the different things people are doing, and posture to show a clearer image and to look proper.

In this image we are using the technique of level's and spacial relations. The techniques we didn't use were Expressions and posture we didn't use these because we started to laugh and got distracted.

Puggle ~ 100 word challenge

 Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. For today's blog post I will be talking about what we have been doing for Wananga today. So for Wananga we were given a task to create a story based on a visual prompt this story could only be 100 words long. I struggled finding an idea but once I did I automatically new what to write about

Here is my story......

The night was cold and I was walking alone. I hear a faint sound in the distance…. I walked further into the mist. I was surrounded by darkness. I suddenly became more aware of my surroundings. The owl in the tree to my left on the sixth branch. I walked further into the darkness. I saw the end of it and ran and ran trying to chase the exit, but it just sunk further and further into the distance. I couldn’t stop, I wouldn’t stop running. But wait I hear whining I whipped my body around. I saw a pug.
