The Cay ~ Book Review

Today I will be sharing with you a book review on the book my class has been reading in English. The book's title is The Cay and it is written by Theodore Taylor, the book was published in 1969. The protagonist of the book is Phillip. The Cay is about a boy whose island is under attack so he goes onto a boat to go somewhere that is safe and it gets sunken he then wakes up on a raft with a man named Timothy, goes blind, and isn't fond of the man he is stuck with, but grows to like him. They then end up on an island and have to survive on it.

The rating that I would give the book is 3/5 this is because I have read better books but it was still really well written and contained plenty of detail, another reason why I gave this rating was because of the way that it was written. The age that I would recommend it to is year 9's because some of the words used to describe things need reasonably mature readers.

Static Electricity

Today I will be answering three questions on my blog they are all about static electricity. The questions are based on what we have been learning about in Physics.

The three particles that make up everything are Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons. Protons have a positive energy charge, Neutrons have a neutral charge, and Electrons have a negative energy charge.

Electrically neutral means that the energy wants to balance out which means that they want an opposite charge.

Insulator ~ An insulator is bad at passing on energy.

Conductor ~ A conductor is good at passing on energy.

An example of static electricity is if you rub a balloon on your head and then slowly lift it and the hair rises as you lift the balloon.

The Cay Poster

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. Today I will be sharing with you a cover that I made for the book the cay. We also had to choose actors to fulfill the roles of the two main characters Timothy and Phillip.

Here is the cover I made...

Here are the actors I chose...

I couldn't find any suitable actors for the role of Phillip. But I was thinking of Samuel L. Jackson for the role of Timothy, or I think that Morgan Freeman would be a good person to be timothy.

Home Ec ~ Open Steak Sandwich

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. Today I will be sharing with you what we made in Home Economics. For our lesson on Thursday, we made an Open Steak Sandwich. The nutrients contained in this are carbohydrates, protein, fats,  and vitamins. We were put into groups in my group there was Isaac, Hannah. and myself.

                                       Open Steak Sandwich                       Serves 4

  • Beef Schnitzel-  trimmed, about 1cm thickness (can be shredded & marinated before cooking)

  • Oil (for cooking meat)

  • 4 Bread rolls or 1 ciabatta loaf, cut into 4 pieces

  • Mayonnaise

  • Sauces - own choice eg Tomato, BBQ, Sweet Chilli

  • Lettuce, Spinach or Mesclun salad leaves

  • Tomatoes, sliced

  • Red Onion rings

  • Cheese slices

  • Avocado

  • 1. Quickly pan fry the meat over a medium high heat until just cooked, turning once during

  • cooking. Allow to rest for 5 minutes. Serve as a piece or shredded

  •

  • 2. Cut rolls or ciabatta loaf pieces in half. These can be warmed or toasted if desired.

  •   Spread the tops and the bottoms of the bread with mayonnaise and /or sauces chosen

  •

  • 3. Top half the bread with lettuce etc, tomato slices, steak and any other ingredients

  •

  • 4. Cover with the remaining bread pieces

  •

  • 5. Serve

The smell of the food when being made was very delightful and when it was ready to eat it tasted very nice there were a lot of different textures in the sandwich from the slimy tomato to the hard bread.

Overall I believe that my group worked really well together and communicated nicely.

Here are some of the photos we took during the lesson......

Eyeball Dissection : Recount and Reflection

Hello fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. Today I will be sharing with you what we did yesterday in physics.

Recently we have been learning about different parts of the eye. Here are some of the parts we learned about.

Cornea ~ The protective outer layer of the eye.

Pupil ~ The pupil is where the light enters the eye.

Iris ~ Controls how much light enters.

Lens ~ Focuses light onto the retina.

Retina ~ Converts light to electrical impulses.

Optic nerve ~ Carries the impulses to the brain.

Humorous ~ The liquid in the eye that gives it its shape.

Steps

~ To start off the dissection we got given a cow's eye and a scalpel, tweezers, and scissors, and a metal container. We put on gloves and rolled up our sleeves.

~ The next thing we did was cut off the excess muscle and fat.

~ We stabbed the cornea with the scalpel and cut around it with scissors, the humorous leaked out of the eye.

~ After that we were then able to see the lens and a gel-like substance surrounding the lens.

~ One of the people that were in my group flipped the eye inside out revealing the tapetum which helps them to see at night.

Personally, I did not enjoy dissecting the cow's eye but both of my other teammates Nici and Hayley both enjoyed doing the dissection. The only reason did not enjoy doing it was because it was slimy and I didn't want the humorous to go everywhere.

Here is a photo of the eye being dissected.

Q + A

Kia Ora fellow readers and welcome back to another blog post. Today I will be answering questions about the book that I have been reading for English.

How long have they been on the island?

They were on the island for 48 days.

What does Phillip do to help Timothy when he is sick?

Puts a wet cloth on his head.

Why is Phillip ready to climb the palm tree?

Because he didn't want to let Timothy down.

Why is Timothy teaching Phillip how to survive?

He is teaching him in case he dies or something happens to him.

What do you think Phillip meant when he asked " are you still black"?

He was asking because he always thought of black people as mean but he was figuring out that timothy was kind.
